Building a Bitcoin Circular Economy in a South African township.
Bitcoin Ekasi is a subsidiary project of The Surfer Kids Non-Profit, a registered non-profit organization, founded in 2010.
The Surfer Kids NPO is 100% donation-based and works to create youth-empowerment in an impoverished South African township, where unemployment is over 50% and where significant numbers of people live in makeshift “shacks” built from scrap material, without basic services like running water.
Similar to what Bitcoin Beach did, Bitcoin Ekasi aims to use a well established community platform to create a circular Bitcoin economy, in the community already serviced by an established outreach initiative.
Bitcoin Ekasi pays these coaches’ salaries entirely in Bitcoin, while simultaneously on-boarding township vendors to accept Bitcoin as payment. This allows the coaches to spend their earned sats in their own community and in so doing lay the groundwork for a circular Bitcoin economy.
Bitcoin Ekasi runs daily educational classes, for youths and adults from the community, using as its foundation the Bitcoin Diploma developed by Mi Primer Bitcoin, in El Salvador.
The adoption of Bitcoin in this community, led by Bitcoin Ekasi, is based on the understanding that Bitcoin is a grass-roots movement of voluntary adoption and adoption is only voluntary if its based on a well informed decision making.
Bitcoin brings hope to people who are otherwise excluded from a financial system and so restricted in their capacity to build a better future for themselves through saving and the accumulation of personal capital.
This is ultimately why Bitcoin Ekasi was founded: to foster Bitcoin adoption atop a bedrock of education, and in so doing create personal empowerment.
