6 months agoA lovely bookstore on the elegant side of town. There’s a wide range of excellent reads for every taste and if you’re just visiting Swellendam for a few days then put this on your relax-list.

2 years agoAmazing bookshop with so many books on every subject possible. Very cosy atmosphere with armchairs where one want to just curl up and read. Do not miss this gem of a shop with the most helpful owner.

6 years agoWhere ever I am, I always look for book stores. Not the new big chain stores, but those small, dusty and often whimsical little shops where you can dream away when seeing all those lovely old books that could tell a thousand stories about their previous owners. Bokmakiri in the Carlton Mall in Swellendam is such a little treasure. When you walk in, all you see is books and the owner will walk over and will greet you while performing one of poems he has for sale. Although the shop looks small, it really has a great collection and for every age. From books for kids to rare 1st editions. And if you happen to be Dutch like me, then the collection of Dutch literature will surprise you. And not to forget their great section of cook books, European, but if you need a typical boerekos recipe, then there a great chance you will find it at Bokmakiri. Something unique, that not all bookstores do is regularly inviting well known and lesser known authors and make them read their own work to whoever woud like to hear it. A bookstore with difference, a bookstore worth to be visited.
