Tokara

Exquisite food, fine wines and rare artworks. Tokara Restaurant opened its doors in October 2001. It was one of the very first iconic winery restaurants established in the Cape Winelands.

Our restaurant staff are hard at work to ensure that the linen is pressed, tables are expertly laid, and the decor positively shines. Did we mention that we have large-scale tapestries by internationally-renowned artist William Kentridge adorning the restaurant walls?

Our kitchen is busy preparing the day’s menu. The local farmers have dropped off their produce, and talented team is transforming this into tempting delights. We’ve scoured our wine cellar to select only the finest bottles of wine for your dining pleasure.

And to top it all off, the dramatic views over Stellenbosch and False Bay make dining at Tokara Restaurant an experience to remember.

We’ve carefully designed our drinks list to enhance and complement your dining experience. It’s a personal and evolving selection of the finest local and international wines and spirits. Choose from the full range of Tokara wines, available by glass or bottle. We also provide wines from neighbouring farms and other prestigious South African estates.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants also included our restaurant in the new “50 Best Discovery” list for 2020.

We cannot wait to welcome you.

A very swish winery. The menu is unusual and interesting with plenty of vegetable options. The mushroom starter with different flavours and textures was excellent as was the olive oil cake, with bits of crunchy olives and delicious ice cream. The manager was gracious when I sent the corky wine back, offering a different bottle. Hats off to the gentleman who served the wine, allowing first a look at the bottle, a sniff and taste and then pouring the wine carefully to conserve the bubbles. The first time it's been served like this here in SA. The fish of the day was overcooked though I asked for it rare, and tender. Again sent back and replaced with a less over cooked piece of fish. This dish was rather overloaded with foams and sauces, masking the flavours of the various items on the plate. Overall, very good and I appreciated the graciousness of the staff. But the quality/price ratio is below what I would have expected.

Was here two years ago and the food was not overwhelming but decided to give it another go. Lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. Whilst the setting is delightful (happy to sit inside with the Aircon on this occasion as it was 38c!) with beautiful long views over the countryside, the food again was the main weak point. We had to send back both our main course dishes as they were seriously overcooked! The FOH staff dealt with this in a perfectly appropriate and professional manner. When the replacements arrived, my wife's Atlantic salmon was perfectly cooked. My lamb rump was cooked as I had asked, pink. It was, however, very dry. I did not want to upset my wife by sending it back again so I wrongly said nothing and ate it. Luckily, lamb is one of the few meats that I can eat even when over cooked for my taste. I had previously informed the restaurant that I would like a little something to recognise my wife's special day and they, in writing, stated that they "usually provided a complimentary dessert with a candle in it". I happily accepted this offer as perfect for the purpose. It never arrived!!! Needless to say, to save any embarrassment to my wife who me nothing about this, I again said nothing. Having requested a couple of espresso coffees, what arrived, were not espresso as I know it. Zero crema on either of them and tasted stewed. Not the experience I was hoping for. I rarely write "bad" things about establishments as by so doing it could jeopodise peopled jobs but the truth is the truth. Sorry guys.

Beautiful setting with amazing views over the valley. Service is fast and friendly, and even the food is good, it is probably not the most important attraction of the restaurant. Well worth a visit though.

This was my first time at the restaurant and definitely will not be my last! The atmosphere and service are incredible and the food was delicious and perfectly considered for the private event I attended. After lunch, you can take a walk down to the wine farm and the views are breathtaking. Definitely a perfect place to visit if you enjoy a quiet and scenic environment.

It was a special occasion lunch to celebrate a friend's 73rd birthday in winter. I loved the warm, elegant atmosphere, viewing the rain-soaked vineyards and olive groves through the huge plate-glass windows. The seasonal à la carte menu required some interpretation from the waitress and is pricey. We all enjoyed our choice of creative dishes, each beautifully plated, with delicious and satisfying flavours paired with wine by the glass. I recommend lunch at Tokara Restaurant for a unique culinary experience on a memorable occasion.
